Goal: European Mountain Running Championships
Tobias Renggli from Buchrain impresses with strong performances.
18-year-old Tobias Renggli leads the Zugerberg Finanz Trophy mountain running rankings with an impressive course record. His performance for his Matura thesis is just as impressive.
Tobias' passion: running and the mountains. He has been training with the Ebikon running team for four years and has been very successful. The young athlete already has one Swiss championship title under his belt, followed by the first U20 European Mountain Running Championships. And that's where Tobias wants to go this year too. "Next weekend, I'm taking part in the Tüfelsschlucht mountain run (SO) and want to qualify for the European Championships in Portugal in July," says Tobias, "so the running stage of the Mountain Trophy from Root to Michaelskreuz was an excellent way to prepare for this goal."
Tour dör d'Schwiiz
Last year, Tobias Renggli had to write his A-level thesis. "At first I wanted to do something sports science-related. Then I had the idea of crossing the Alps on a racing bike - but then the borders were closed. So I decided on the 'Tour dör d'Schwiiz' project." Tobias visited all 250 Swiss cities on his racing bike and climbed the highest mountain in each canton. The cantonal school Alpenquai Lucerne praised the work with: "The report takes the reader on an extraordinary journey through Switzerland with skillful language, exciting content and informative, intelligent descriptions."
500 km in 24 hours
The facts show just how extraordinary the journey was: 403 kilometers of hiking with 33,100 meters of elevation gain. The longest stage, up to the Dufourspitze, was 51 kilometers! On his racing bike, the high school graduate covered 6,300 kilometers and 64,300 meters in altitude. The longest daily stage: 500 kilometers in 23:42 hours! "Sometimes I spent the night somewhere in a sleeping bag or I rode all night so that no overnight stay was necessary." If you can do that, you probably have what it takes to finish in the top 10 at a European Championship.
