Excursion tip: The current stage of the Zugerberg Finanz Trophy offers two sights: the Gubel viewpoint and the Bloodhound guided missile position.
The Zugerberg Finanz Trophy is currently taking place in Menzingen. The running/walking routes lead over the Gubel. A place where it is worth taking a break.
Most participants want to complete the Trophy routes as quickly as possible. In this case, the kilometre-long climb from the Schurtannen farm up to the Maria Hilf monastery on the Gubel is hardly the most popular section of the route. Every single one of the 70 meters in altitude makes the thigh muscles ache a little more. Once you reach the top, you are overwhelmed by the fantastic view - but only for a brief moment, as you are about to descend again towards the finish.
How about sitting on the bench in front of the monastery church, pausing for a short (or long) moment and soaking up the view? It's worth it for anyone who has never visited this beautiful place. Those who know it will visit it regularly. "There are currently 13 sisters in the convent. This makes the convent one of the largest Capuchin convents in Switzerland," can be read on the website kloster-gubel.ch. In terms of history, it states that the battle between Catholic and Reformed troops took place on Mount Gubel in 1531, followed by the construction of the battle and pilgrimage chapel in 1566. "This commemorates the victory of the Catholics over the Reformed towns of the old Swiss Confederation."
Summer holiday tip
Before reaching the monastery, the Trophy walker or Trophy runner passes a less idyllic but equally exciting location: the Bloodhound guided missile site. It was built in 1964, decommissioned in 1999 and protected as a monument of regional importance. Anyone interested in the inner workings of the facility can book a guided tour with Zug Tourism. The next dates are Saturday, July 9 or August 13, 2022, ideal for a summer vacation excursion. The ticket can be booked at zug-tourismus.ch.
