"Some people have developed altitude fever."
The Menzingen Cycling Club is hard at work. Here on the Chnollen, the finish of the current Mountain Trophy.
Together with his club members from Veloclub (VC) Menzingen, Kari Röllin is supervising the current stage of the Zugerberg Finanz Trophy. And he himself is one of the most hard-working participants.
With 78 starts and 480 kilometers, Kari Röllin was in 10th place in the multi-starter Trophy last Sunday evening. "Running is good for me," says the 61-year-old from Menzingen. However, he has only set himself small goals: "Top 10 in the multi-starter trophy and in the top 20 in the multi-starter trophy over all years." He is currently on course.
With us since the beginning
The courses in Menzingen have been part of the Trophy since 2010. Since then, they have been managed by VC Menzingen. "We are delighted when people from Zug who enjoy exercise take part in our Trophy stage and discover our hilly moraine landscape," says Röllin. The people of Menzingen are also taking part in the stage on foot and by bike. VC Menzingen is currently in 2nd place in the club trophy. Club members have already clocked up almost 1000 times. And not just by bike. Many kilometers are clocked up by the walking group, which meets on Monday evenings.
In altitude fever
However, many cyclists are lone fighters and therefore ride alone, says Kari Röllin. What is striking this year is that they can count almost twice as many starts on the Mountain Trophy as in previous years. "The new altitude challenge has also motivated the club members. Evelyn Kiepas conquered the Chnollen on her racing bike 15 times in one day. Matthias Goltz also cycled up the Chnollen 24 times in five days." He thus secured the hoodie that comes with 5,000 meters of altitude. Zugerberg Finanz has already presented over 100 hard-working participants with such a hoodie. So far, over 180 athletes have been delighted with the socks, which are given as a gift for 2,500 meters of altitude.
