Inspired by the Trophy
Etienne Schumpf has once again pulled his running shoes out of the closet for the Zugerberg Finanz Trophy.
Zug city councillor Etienne Schumpf did not miss the opportunity to lace up his running shoes once again for his home stage. And it is unlikely to be the last time.
The start of the current Zug stage is at the Herti athletics facility. It is therefore just a stone's throw away from the town hall. For Etienne Schumpf, this place is also associated with memories of his youth. As a member of LK Zug, the middle distance was his favorite discipline. However, his name only appears once in the Zugerberg Finanz Trophy rankings: he ran a lap in Steinhauser Wald in 2017. "I was working in London at the time and training for a half marathon. I took the opportunity to run with my father. He's been an active Trophy participant for over ten years and is even faster than me today, so I'll only be back when the tide turns," says Etienne with a grin. At the moment, you're more likely to find him playing padel, tennis or - if time permits - golf.
Meaningful work
As head of education, sport is also part of his job. "It's my world! When I became a city councillor in 2023, it was the department I wanted. Education and sport are such important pillars of society. That's why I find my work extremely meaningful. It gives me enormous pleasure when we help to get hundreds of children and adults moving." The current major project is the "Master Plan for Sports Facilities". There are around 80 sports clubs in the city of Zug and the city manages between 40 and 50 sports facilities. "The aim of this master plan is to ensure fair conditions of use for all clubs. The loudest club shouldn't simply get the most space and time," explains Etienne, adding, "We want to create clear, comprehensible criteria."
Etienne Schumpf doesn't just talk about sport, he is also fit. The 6.7 kilometers hardly left him out of breath - quite the opposite: it seems as if he had just remembered how great a run like this feels. His conclusion: "I think I need to buy proper running shoes again. I'm just inspired to include running more in my sports agenda again."
The official time window for the Zug and Schmittli-Zugerberg stages runs until Sunday, September 7, 2025.
