How the Zugerberg Finanz Trophy becomes a marathon
Thomas Elsener from Zug and Anita Caruso from Lucerne completed a marathon on the Zugerberg Finanz Trophy on Easter Monday.
Anyone who completes all of our mountain stages in one day in one bike ride can sew the official Trophy badge onto their rucksack. A similar idea may now have been born for runners. Thomas Elsener, who has been a passionate runner for over a decade, and Anita Caruso, who has been running regularly for a good five years, have set an example: they completed the short distance of each stage and also jogged the distance in between.
The two started in Hünenberg See on the Ennetsee stage. "We ran from the bottom to the top so that we could train for our next mountain run, the 46-kilometre Stoos Trail, at the same time," says Thomas. From Hünenberger Badi, we headed to Steinhauser Wald, then to Zug, Baar and on to Menzingen. Unterägeri marked the final stage, where the two had to add around two hundred meters to complete the official 42.2 kilometers. "If we had pressed the start button at the Hünenberg Chämleten stop, it would have worked out perfectly," says Anita, who traveled all the way from Kriens for this run. It was also her first time on the Trophy. "Thomas has often talked about it, but it's not worth it for me to drive all the way here." On the other hand, Thomas is on the Trophy all the more often: "I'm actually a fan of this project. I've been a regular on the signposted routes since 2013. The introduction of the altitude challenge, where you can win great prizes if you participate diligently, as well as the drinks reception offered by Zugerberg Finanz AG for all Challenge graduates, has motivated me even more to move my training sessions to the Trophy routes." And who knows, maybe next year there will be a brevet badge up for grabs for all those who follow in their footsteps.
The current stages in Baar and from Root to the Michel end this Sunday, May 18, 2025. From Monday, May 19, the timing devices will be at the Hünenberger Badi for the Ennetsee stage and at the Ägeri/Weinbergstrasse junction for the mountain route from Zug to the Zugerberg.
